Shinobue

Beautiful Design,
Excellent Tone,
Refined Tuning
"Shinobue"
The traditional transverse flute
from Japan. It is hand-crafted
from bamboo with a simple design.

Design your unique shinobue
by choosing the color and design

Your favorite shinobue that you will love to see and hold.

A new sound with rich,
resonating overtones

In nature, each bamboo is unique.
Knowing this, Rippei carefully adds texture to the inside of each flute
to bring out its character and create a shinobue with rich overtones.

Rippei's unique, modern design
with traditional Japanese touch

For Thick Lacquer Finish, you can choose a design with pure gold
leaf or powdered gold and a traditional lacquer technique
called "Wajima-nuri Chinkin," to give the shinobue a deep radiance
that will not fade.

A shinobue that is suited for
any musical context wherever you go

Thick Lacquer Finish is fully lacquered with multi-layers to make a very durable instrument
in good condition. Bamboo may still crack under certain extreme conditions.

About Shinobue Rippei

"Easy high range" "Easy sustain" "Ergonomic"
Rippei began by making shinobues for friends, and developed his shinobue to address the difficulties inherent to the instrument.
As a player himself, he understands the challenges of beginner and experienced players alike. Now many people worldwide enjoy Rippei's shinobue.
Please understand the lead time is long because each shinobue is handcrafted.
The first step in making a shinobue is selecting and cutting the bamboo.
Rippei harvests the bamboo in Fall and Winter, then carefully dries them for about two years.
The secret of its beautiful tone is in careful tuning and detailed craftsmanship.
After the bamboo is dried, Rippei straightens it and cuts the holes, paints, polishes, and tunes the flute. He then repeats this process until the shinobue is just right.
Only then does he add his design. These are the careful and precise steps to getting a beautiful, rich sound.
